Community shocked as child dies in balcony plunge

Mother allegedly attempts suicide after discovery.

Reports that a three-year old boy who was left alone in an apartment died after he fell from the balcony have residents raging about the mother’s alleged negligence.

He was reportedly left home alone while his mother went out shopping last Saturday, 19 December. She locked him in the family’s apartment on the third floor of their building in Wilropark.

Roodepoort Police spokesperson Nonhlanhla Khumalo told other media houses that the child took a chair and jumped over the balcony.

When the mother returned to their home and realised what had happened to her child, she allegedly attempted to commit suicide by drinking poison.

The Roodepoort Police were called out to the apartment at around 1pm, informed that there was a murder. Netcare 911 personnel declared the boy dead, Khumalo told the Record.

The mother was taken to hospital and has been discharged on Tuesday, 22 December.

The father allegedly asked the investigating officer to give the family time for funeral preparations before continuing their investigations.

Khumalo confirmed an inquest docket had been opened, but the police had not yet heard the mother’s version of events.
