Latest Pikitup strike is illegal

JOBURG – Pikitup workers are on strike again as from 18 December.

Pikitup spokesperson, Jacky Mashapu has confirmed that Pikitup workers are striking again. “We are experiencing service delivery disruptions due to an illegal work stoppage by employees affiliated to the union Samwu [South African Municipal Workers Union],” said Mashapu. He added that the illegal strike will affect refuse collection in all the regions of Joburg.

“It is rather unfortunate, particularly on the part of the union to embark on yet another unprotected work stoppage. This, following a political facilitated agreement (PFA) brokered by the Gauteng’s MEC for Co-Operative Department, Jacob Mamabolo, on 3 December,” Mashapu added.

Mashapu appealed to residents and business owners to be patient and continue to leave their bins and excess waste inside their yards, until further notice. “We once again apologise to all affected by the service disruptions. Every effort is being made to speedily address this unsolicited work stoppage,” he concluded.

In light of the latest strike, Ward 87 Councillor Amanda Forsythe recommended that residents reduce waste as much as possible by cleaning and recycling all paper, plastic, tin and glass. “I have also asked the resident associations in my ward to consider hiring a skip for the suburb to avoid dumping,” she said.
