Pikitup schedule finally back to normal

JOBURG – An alleged sit-in by Pikitup staff members, initially thought to be the reason for waste not being picked up.

Pikitup refuse collection was on hold on 14 December after an alleged sit-in by staff members.

It was initially thought that members of Pikitup were involved in a sit-in, right after a strike by workers of Pikitup. The strike occurred from 24 November until 3 December after workers demanded a raise in their salaries. They protested alongside members of the South African Municipal Workers Union. The strike has caused many overflowing bins in Joburg and residents have had to make alternate plans for waste removal.

According to Ward 88 Councillor, Pat Richards, many bins were left in the rain and heat and were not picked up after the apparent sit-in. Jacky Mashapu, spokesperson for Pikitup said that the sit-in was a misunderstanding. “The refuse collection schedule is back on track,” said Mashapu, who refused to comment further.
