Toastmasters is a wonderful life

Last meeting for the year turns out to be loads of fun.

To celebrate their last meeting for the year, the Florida Toastmasters strutted their stuff in glamourous and glitzy outfits during their annual Christmas dinner meeting.

The meeting was called to order at 7.30pm sharp by sergeant-at-arms Lawrence Makeleni.

After dinner orders were placed at the Huguenot Restaurant in Flora Centre, where they met, Dawn Hemming extended a warm welcome to division director Thabo Malefane and guest speaker Zoya Mabuto. Hemming proposed the loyal toast and the toast to Toastmasters was proposed by Malefane.

Michael Glencross proposed the toast of the evening to ‘It’s a wonderful life’, the 1946 Hollywood movie, a fable of mankind’s interconnections.

Johan Herman was the first to deliver his speech, ‘I have a dream’, talking about his wish that the nation will rise and live out the true meaning of its creed. His message encouraged listeners to believe in themselves and their dreams.

Craig Ellis’ speech, ‘His legendary philosophy lives on’, highlighted a young man’s humble journey which began with milking cows for a living. He later made investments that earned huge returns and proved even the simplest profession can be profitable.

Robert de Kramer’s speech, ‘Always believe mass media’, caused listeners to re-examine some of the hard facts and truts about the 9/11 attacks in New York City, USA. While official government reports stated the collision of the airplanes and buildings combined with the intensity of the fire ignited by its jet fuel weaked and brought the structures down is perhaps feasable in theory, it is scientifically impossible, he stated.

“We are spoon-fed these absurdities by a mass media whose inability for deductive reasoning is trumped by our own,” De Kramer said.

Guest speaker Zoya Mabuto earlier this year won the District 74 English Prepared Speech Contest and entertained listeners with stories of her journey with Toastmasters and a compelling visual presentation of her trip to the annual convention in Las Vegas. She concluded quoting the powerful words of 2015 world champion of public speaking Mohammed Qahtani, “I am because we are”.

Glencross added more fun to the evening by hosting a Christmas carol quiz.

Herman won both the quiz and the wine draw and Tim Knights won the Christmas hamper. Herman and De Kramer completed their CC1 and CC6 assignments.

“We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the editorial staff of the Record for their unfailing support during 2015 and wish them and their loved ones safe travels and a joyous festive season,” Hemming said.
