What about waste this December?

How Pikitup will go about collecting residents' trash this December.

Pikitup’s Roodepoort depot is back on track with waste collection after the recent strike and has a plan for how it will manage waste this December.

In an email to Roodepoort councillors, Roodepoort depot manager Stella Wilson confirmed the entity has caught up on its backlog in the area and it will be business as usual from today (Monday 9 December).

Last week, the entity launched their festive season campaign, aimed at raising awareness, educating residents on waste management practices.

“Periods of heightened economic activity and consumerism, like the festive season, usually increase our daily waste quantities. For this reason we embarked on the campaign, to buoy up responsible waste practices, Pikitup’s managing director Amanda Nair in a press statement said.

The mismanagement of waste manifests in illegal dumping, overloaded bins and degradation of open spaces, which is what the entity hopes to avoid this December. It also provides opportunity for fleas and rats to move in, posing a health hazard.

Nair said the best way to be responsible with waste this year is to be aware of Pikitup’s holiday schedule, to consider donating unwanted items to charity institutions instead of trashing them and buying only according to what your household needs.

Throughout December, Pikitup will be in full swing in Region C, tending to household refuse, recyclables, garden sites, bulk and landfill sites except on Christmas Day, 25 December. They’ll also be working on both the public holidays, Reconciliation Day (16 December) and New Year’s Day (1 January 2016). Nair urges residents, whose collection date falls on 25 December, to keep their bins inside their premises until 1 January, when it will be collected.

To make things a little easier, here’s a graphic representation of Pikitup’s holiday schedule:
