331 arrested in the Honeydew Cluster

An alleged rapist (25) was among the 331 suspects arrested in the Honeydew Cluster during the past few days.

Spokesperson for the Honeydew Cluster Commander Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela released a statement stating that the remaining suspects were incarcerated for a range of offences.

They varied from common assault and GBH (grievous bodily harm), domestic violence, malicious damage to property, road traffic offences to housebreaking and robbery.

It is alleged that on Tuesday [8 December] a mother sent her two daughters to a spaza shop at an informal settlement near Lanseria. Only the younger daughter made it back.The elder daughter (15) went missing.Her efforts to trace her were in vain.

The following day information on the teenager’s whereabouts, was received. She had been spotted in the company of the suspect, who resides in the same informal settlement.

The girl was reportedly found at the suspect’s place.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim was allegedly raped. The suspect was arrested on Thursday [12 December].

The police also focused on alcohol-related transgressions. Those who drink alcohol in public and unlicensed traders, felt the pinch.

They maintain that the better part of domestic violence related offences, street muggings – especially over the weekend – rapes, assaults and in certain instances, attempted murder and murder, are generated by the use or abuse of alcohol.

Suspects who have not had their day in court will appear in Randburg and Roodepoort magistrates’ courts soon.
