Scouts at Pathways

Discovery Scouts opened the sensory room at Pathways Roodepoort.

The swifts from 1st Discovery Scout Group officially opened the sensory room they made at the Pathways Roodepoort.

17-year-old Stacey Elshove chose to help Pathways as part of her service project to receive a Springbok badge.

The badge is the highest award attainable by a Scout in South Africa. A Scout is required to complete all the requirements for the Springbok award before their 18th birthday.

Elshove, with the help of group scouter Ken Stanton and the girls in her scouts team visited Pathways last month and found an unused Wendy house.

“A close family friend has cerebral palsy so I’m familiar with the mental condition and it means more to me because I am aware of the impact it has. By being here I wanted to do help,” said Elshove.

The Wendy was renovated as the ceiling, electricity was fixed. The walls were painted dark with a few artistic drawings. There are fans, toys and music to help stimulate the minds of the pupils.

“To see one of the young pupils reaction when they went into the sensory room is heartwarming. As they see the different lights, colour and movement is what makes them active,” said Pathways Roodepoort principal Sunette Pretorius.
