Local pit bull walks away with national honours

Griffin won the award at the United Pit Bull Association of South Africa's (Upasa) annual prestige show at the end of November

Witpoortjie resident Riaan Swanepoel’s chest is swollen after his beloved 19-month-old pit Bull, Griffen, has walked away with the coveted Best Junior Male of 2015 title.

Griffin won the award at the United Pit Bull Association of South Africa’s (Upasa) annual prestige show at the end of November. Griffen did best in the Confirmation category which looks at the dogs physical condition, how well bred he is, his temperament and even how he is towards the judges. He also took part in other categories such as long hang (of which the current record is 4.5 hours), high jump and weight pulling.

Swanepoel says Griffin, who’s family line can be traced back ten generations to the United States, loves swimming and that he swims 900m a day. He also has to be walked everyday and requires a special diet.

According to Swanepoel people interested in getting a Pit Bull must research the bloodline and find out what the breeder’s motives are

and know that like any other pet Pit Bulls requires a lot of attention and love. But he says they are very friendly and want to please their owners.
