Water floods Sjampanje street in Wilgeheuwel

WILGEHEUWEL – Gushing water in Wilgeheuwel could have caused by a a burst pipe.

Water gushed out of a water pipe on the corner of Sjampanje and Lubbe Rouge streets on 8 December.

Water came from a standpipe and ran all the way down Sjampanje Street causing a flood by the stream. Johannesburg Water workers were on site trying to sort out the problem. Dirty water was pumped out of the pipe to give residents clean water which only came back between 1am and 2am.

Joburg Water spokesperson David Sibiya said that he was not aware of the situation, “It could have been a burst pipe which can be caused by aging infrastructure or pressure on the the pipes that expand when it gets too hot,” Sibiya speculated.

Ward 97 Councillor Jaco Engelbrecht said that he had no knowledge of it. “No residents had reported the incident to me,” he said. He added that residents must call Johannesburg Water in such situations, get a reference number, and if the matter is not sorted in around five hours he must be contacted.
