Party packs filled with love

ZANDSPRUIT – Underprivileged children receive a sweet surprise.

Oak Hill Academy in Radiokop and its sister school, Little Bean Early Leaning Centre in Weltevreden Park and Radiokop, catered to the needs of the underprivileged children in Zandspruit on 9 December.

The principals of the schools gathered party packs that were assembled by the children from the schools. To have enough money to buy the party pack goodies, the schools sold Christmas crafts – that were created by children at the schools – to the parents. Through creating and selling a product, the children learned how to see a process through, which was very educational for them.

With money generated from the craft sale, they were able to put together 500 party packs. However, one of the parents contributed an extra 100 packs just to keep the Christmas spirit going.

Principal of Oak Hill Academy, Debbie Brandsma said that this was the second time the schools did this and it is a joy to help children in need.

“This is quite honestly the best time of year for me, seeing the joy the children get from these party packs just makes one happy,” said Brandsma.

Brandsma was accompanied by Little Beans Principal Kirsten Andrews and teacher at the school, Charlene Bronner. They, along with some Honeydew Police officers drove to different nursery and pre-primary schools in Zandspruit, delivering the party packs.

“Actually seeing the reality that is out there and giving back to the less-fortunate and having them appreciate it, makes one even more grateful,” said Bronner.

The team also gave out party packs to children they saw in the streets.

Brandsma concluded that both schools try to have this type of community initiatives all through the year.
