Patience as Pikitup picks up the slack

Pikitup working late at night to get back on track with refuse collection, according to depot manager.

Patience, residents. That’s what Pikitup spokesperson Jacky Mashapu asks of residents as they work to pick up the slack of the two-week strike.

Many wheely bins in Roodepoort are still posted outside, overflowing with waste that was meant to be picked up around three weeks ago. Complexes in the area they’re clustered together, many accompanied by black waste bags with garden refuse and other discarded paraphernalia.

Speaking to the Record yesterday, Mashapu confirmed Pikitup is back on track in terms of following the normal refuse collection schedule, “but it’s going to take a while to play catch-up”.

“Residents, please put out your bins as per the normal refuse collection schedules and allow us to catch up on lost time,” he said.

In an email to Ward 85 councillor Carl Mann, Pikitup’s regional manager of the Roodepoort depot Stella Wilson confirmed employees worked late on Tuesday night to catch up.

“The areas I list here were not completed due to excessive waste,” she said.

“We will be starting in those areas this morning (Wednesday 9 November) before proceeding to our normal Tuesday rounds.

“As Tuesday rounds are just as large, it is expected that some work will be carried over to Wednesday.”

Wilson said the following areas will be cleaned today:

• Weltevreden Park and Allen’s Nek (three loads)

• Ruimsig (half a load)

• Wilgeheuwel (two and a half loads)

• Strubens Valley (two loads)

• Poortview (one load)

• Bramfischerville (one load)

• Panorama (three loads)

• Doornkop (half a load)

• Solplaatjes (half a load)
