CoJ: Pay up before you take off

CoJ reminds residents to settle municipal accounts before checking out for the holidays.

The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) wishes residents a happy festive season and safe travelling to their holiday destinations, but wishes to remind them to settle municipal accounts.

To do this, CoJ innovatively started sending customers SMS messages on 1 December to remind them to pay up before they take off on holiday. CoJ spokesperson Kgamanyane Maphologela says although it’s a festive time, it’s also the time of the year when a lot of customers default on their payments.

“We understand that many families feel the pinch in their pockets at this time of year, but we want to remind our customers that they are required to settle their municipal debts. Our credit control procedures continue throughout the holiday season and we would hate to see a situation where any customer finds himself experiencing discomfort, going without access to basic services like water and electricity simply because they missed a payment,” he said.

He said it is easy to forget such routine things when one has family visits and holiday plans at top of mind.

“Paying your account timeously means you can enjoy the holiday season without the worry of outstanding debt.”

If you don’t like standing in a queue, remember:

• You can pay via EasyPay, an option at grocery stores like Pick n Pay and Shoprite/ Checkers

• Debit orders

• Direct deposits at major banks

• ATMs

• Internet and cellphone banking

• Any SA post office

• The council pay point: Roodepoort City Hall at corner Berlandina and Dieperink Streets, Roodepoort CBD

If you can’t pay in full or on time:

Visit any of the customer service centers across the city, or the Region C center on the ground floor of the Roodepoort Civic Centre, 100 Christiaan De Wet Road, Florida Park. Officials will aid residents in making a financial arrangement that suits them and gives them peace of mind.

If you didn’t receive an account:

Either proceed to pay the same amount as you have the previous month or call Joburg Connect on 0860 56 28 74 to enquire how much you owe. Customers can also register to receive accounts via email on CoJ’s website at www.joburg.org.za
