JMPD embarks on zero-tolerance campaign

JOBURG – JMPD embarks on a campaign hoping to decrease deaths on the road over the festive season.

JMPD will embark on a zero-tolerance campaign over the December/January festive season and will be stationed at all entry and exit points in Johannesburg.

With around 1 293 people pronounced dead during the 2014 festive season, JMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said that they hoped to drastically reduce this number.

The campaign is set to start from 10 December and will end on 10 January next year.

“We are going to inspect vehicle fitness, road-worthiness of vehicles and we will inspect the condition of tyres, headlights, daylights, wipers and any motor vehicle found not complying with the standard set will be fined and vehicles in bad condition will be impounded and taken to the police impound,” Minnaar said.

He pointed out that they would be emphasising on driver fitness and would be on the lookout for motorists who did not have the correct licence disc for their vehicles.

“We will also be paying attention to speeding and motorists must note that if they are 40km over the speed limit they will be arrested and charged,” Supt Minnaar explained.

He warned that drunk drivers would be arrested and taken to a hospital for a blood test and thereafter charged with drinking and driving.

“Everyone in the vehicle must have a safety belt on and drivers who are going to be driving long distances must ensure that they take a break every two hours to avoid fatigue,” he said.

Supt Minnaar wished everyone a happy festive season and advised motorists to drive safely.
