Police ask for information about Sindane’s death

RUIMSIG – No arrests have been made and the case is still under investigation.

Former South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee and Athletics SA CEO, Banele Sindane (60) was shot and killed at his home in Ruimsig on 30 November.

Honeydew Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs confirmed that it was an armed robbery, “No arrests have been made yet and the case is still under investigation,” said Jacobs.

She added that three suspects allegedly overpowered and tied up the security guard at the town house complex in Ruimsig and the suspects then went into the unit by breaking a window.

Sindane’s 13-year-old daughter was watching TV and ran to call her father for help. “He was confronted by the three suspects and shots were fired, fatally wounding Sindane,” said WO Jacobs. The suspects fled the scene, on foot, with a TV set and two cell phones. The 13-year-old girl received counselling on the scene.

A case of murder and armed robbery was opened at Honeydew Police Station.

Anyone with information is kindly requested to make contact with the investigating officer, Detective Constable Godfrey Mabasa, on 073 415 0692. SAPS issued a warning to all residents in complexes to close their doors, windows and curtains at night.
