South African Riding for the Disabled Gauteng Association Christmas wishlist 2015

Sarda Gauteng aims to provide therapeutic and recreational horse riding for disabled people so that they might benefit in all aspects of their mental, physical and social lives. Play your part this festive season and donate what yo can.

Operational costs

• 10 ponies and 2 donkeys – feed and supplements (see point 2), tick and flea sprays, farriers / equine podiatrist, dentists, vets and physios
• Salaries for stable manager, 2 grooms, a part-time gardener, fundraiser and secretary
• Office supplies and consumables
• Sponsorship of our printing requirements – printer cartridges, paper, printer maintenance, advertising posters and brochures
• Day-to-day running expenses of the Centre including tea, coffee, milk, sugar, biscuits for our staff and volunteers
• Security, insurance and telephone
• Maintenance of lawn mower, grass cutter, electric fence, gate motor and plumbing
• Consider sponsoring a donkey or pony (R250–R500 per week), a child (R540 p/m) or a school (R4 500 p/m) for a month, a year or two.

Ponies’ food requirements

• Equus Train
• Leisure – 5 bags per month; preferred supplier – Milmac 086 100 1182
• Good quality teff, eragrostis and lucerne . Our winter requirement is in the region of 150 square bales of teff per month. Summer requirements are a little less, but we have virtually no grazing.
• The ponies are fed very little in the way of concentrates, but get ad lib hay. Preferred suppliers –teff or eragrostis – Cassie Appelcryn 082 448 4404; Milmac, 086 100 1182;

Midfeeds

• Supplements – multivitamin, minerals, amino acids and herbal dewormer from Winning Performance, 086 111 4116
• Geyser – 10 to 20-litre Kwikot Prisma over the counter or solar geyser for the catering hut

Playing equipment

• Soft balls – various sizes
• Balancing beam
• Play house
• Plastic roll along bikes

Miscellaneous yard requirements

• Wax-Sol to treat our stable doors, wooden stable block and hay barn, 20–60 litres
• Gum poles preferably 100–125 diameter and 3.5m in length
• Set of screwdrivers – various sizes and heads
• Stihl two-stroke oil
• Fencing Wire 2.5– 3mm
• Metal rakes x 2
• Long garden hose pipe

Sensory trail

• 5 Garden benches – recycled plastic / concrete / wood
• Horse see-saw (0.8×2.5×0.02 pressure-treated plywood / planks on a 0.8×2.5m frame)
• Large wooden bridge sturdy enough for a horse to walk over (at least 1.5m wide)
• 6–10 bags concrete ready mix
• Misting spray unit to walk under
• Irrigation system for the horse labyrinth, vegetable garden and contemplation garden
• 8 Natural horsemanship halters – from Franco Saddler, 3m long lead
• Enamel paint (bright and neon colours) and rust-proofing for our jump poles, metal barrels and jump uprights
• Touch area – rough, smooth and soft – boards covered with sandpaper, velvet or rubber.
• Plants with different texture leaves – succulents, lamb’s ears
• Low-growing, hardy, sun-loving indigenous plants for the borders of the horse labyrinth (roughly 460m in length)
• 2 x Wooden wind chimes
• Signs for no feeding ponies, indemnity / own risk, parking, office
• Scarecrow

Office equipment

• A3 or A4 laminator
• Long-handled stapler
• Artist’s type easel (preferably collapsible for ease of travel)

• 2 Supportive ergonomic office chairs
• Punch, stapler, calculator, scissors, ruler and highlighters – to make up a dedicated fundraising event box
