Refuse collection resumes despite strike

Operations resume, but entity still working towards agreement with Samwu.

Pikitup’s managing director Amanda Nair yesterday (Sunday 29 November) revealed the refuse collection recovery plan despite the ongoing strike.

“Normal refuse collection rounds will resume in accordance with the normal collection schedule,” spokesperson Jacky Mashapu in a press statement said. “Additional vehicles, plants, equipment and manpower have been made available to augment capacity at each depot.”

Mashapu urges residents to put their refuse bins outside in accordance with their normal refuse collection schedules.

“All excess refuse in bags can be placed next to the 240l waste bins on the scheduled day of collection.”

The strike is not over but refuse will be collected by contracted service providers while the entity works to reach an agreement with the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu). A meeting between the two parties is set for later today.

Pikitup told another publication around 30 000 tons of waste piled up since the strike commenced last Monday (23 November).
