GALLERY: Christmas Market ensures shopping bags full

RUIMSIG – The Gateway Society's annual Christmas Market on 28 November, put smiles on the faces of residents and community members.

The Gateway Society held its annual Christmas market on 28 November. Even though the weather was not ideal, it could not stop loyal supporters of the Gateway Society from supporting a great Christmas market for a great cause.

The market hosted a variety of stalls from community members. The Gateway Village Workshop attracted many visitors. Tables were packed with homemade Christmas presents, decorations and toys made by residents. Excited residents rushed over to show parents their creations in the hope that it would be purchased. The smell of barbecue attracted many people to the food stall, while a local singer, Helen Lang, entertained visitors and residents with music. A little makeshift train drove around with children smiling and laughing in its wagons.

A visitor, Viviette du Plessis, said that she attends the market every year. “I especially love the workshop and buying homemade objects. I love seeing things that would match items I bought the previous years,” said Du Plessis. Another visitor attended the market with her grandchildren. Robin Gaul said that she previously helped her friend, who has a child in the society, out at the market. “I think this market is very good. It is nice for the children and the prices are very affordable,” said Gaul.

“I am happy with the turnout, but I did expect a bit more people,” said village manager, Ronel Barnard. She added that it is great to see residents and members of the community interact with each other. “People need to get used to our residents and know that they are such lovable people.”

The Gateway Society provides a home and school for the mentally and physically disabled.
