One thread a time for Sibusiso

Meet the next threader.

Sparrow Ministries Rainbow Village has been hiding a talented young man in their midst.

20-year-old Sibusiso Hlwempu has been making a name for himself creating hats, shopping bags, aprons and peg bags.

Hlwempu learned how to sew thanks to Olga Mukhwanazi.

The 62-year-old started teaching the youth of the village earlier this year.

However, it was Hlwempu who showed love and passion for designing and asked Mukhwanazi to give him more lessons.

“At first I just wanted to learn how to make different items with the material. The more I learned I started becoming passionate about sewing,” he said.

Hlwempu started sewing by learning how to make a hat and Mukhwanazi is proud to see how determined and dedicated her pupil is.

“I wanted to share my talent and leave a skill behind for the children. But it was Hlwempu who showed the necessary interest to want to learn. From there I taught him how to thread the machine to drawing a sketch of his design,” she said.

He dreams of becoming a fashion designer after he’s done with school to pursue his passion further and live his dream.

Hlwempu pointed to his vinyl bag as the item he is most proud of designing and making.

“Putting everything together is so much fun. From coming up with a design then sketching it and finding a way to make your vision a reality is great,” he said.

Mukhwanazi added she would like to see Hlwempu become successful with his designs and progress further than she did.

“Seeing him excel my soul becomes rich because Hlwempu is such a talented young man. I wish to see him learning more about designing and one day becoming a household name in South Africa,” she said.
