Department of Education clarifies WRHS assault

According to the Department of Education, perpetrators were suspended until the outcome of a disciplinary hearing today.

The Gauteng Department of Education finally clarified facts around the West Ridge High School assault two weeks ago and the disciplinary process to be followed.

According to department spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane, school principal Sydney Mashige informed them that two pupils were physically bullied by nine fellow pupils on the school grands on Tuesday 10 November.

“Educators who saw the incident taking place attended to the matter and brought it to the attention of the School Management Team (SMT) who facilitated the process of calling Roodepoort police, parents of victims and parents of perpetrators,” Sekhonyane said.

“An SMS was also sent to the parents of the pupils involved in this incident to avail themselves to the school premises as a matter of urgency.”

Sekhonyane further stated the victims were taken to hospital by their parents under the instruction and guidance of SMT.

“The perpetrators were placed under provisional suspension pending the outcome of a disciplinary process.”

The Record was informed the disciplinary hearing is scheduled for today (Monday 23 November).

“Three of the pupils who were part of this incident have been arrested on charges of assault and intention to cause grievous bodily harm.

“They have been released on bail and are currently back at school to complete their examinations under very strict conditions.”
