Sewage killing off fish in local dam

Dam used for fishing.

Local resident Freddie Pieterse is highly concerned after he made a disturbing discovery at Skinner Dam last week.

According to Pieterse, sewage is gushing into the dam that is bordering Buitekant Street at an alarming rate and he speculates that within the next two weeks the damage will be irreversible should something not be done. What is worrying is that the dam, which is the only one in the Roodepoort area except for Florida Lake, is frequented not only by fishermen but also religious groups who baptise their members.

Although it is uncertain how long the sewage had been gushing into the dam, the critical nature of the problem is evident in the fact that dead fish are already floating on the water and washing out to the shore.

The Record has contacted Joburg Water for comment and to find out what action will be taken but they have not replied by the time this article was published.
