First veggies harvested from municipal Leratong garden

Vegetables to go to indigent families in the vicinity of the communal garden.

The first vegetables were harvested from the Leratong vegetable garden near Leratong Hospital, developed and maintained by the City of Johannesburg, last week.

“The project was initiated to address food insecurity issues in our marginalised wards and benefit indigent households,” Puleng Ditabe, Region C manager of Johannesburg Parks and Zoo, in a press statement explained.

“We selected to partner with the Department of Social Development, as they have a food resilient programme and can identify indigent households who can benefit from the garden.”

She said Social Development also helped to lay out a crop plan and maintenance plan for the garden. However, the garden remains property of City Parks. They use the services of Community Work Programme (CWP) employees in the ward to maintain it, who are in turn monitored by the Social Development Food Resilient coordinator of the ward.

On 5 November CWP employees harvested the first vegetables, which were then handed over to residents of an informal settlement close by. They were visibly overjoyed at the generosity of the municipality.
