Boy, 17, discharged from hospital after school assault

School mum on the issue, but more allegations have come to light.

The boy, 17, who was assaulted on West Ridge High School (WRHS) grounds, allegedly by 20 assailants, was discharged from Life Flora Clinic last weekend.

He is now recovering at home, his mother told the Record. He will return to the hospital today for more blood tests, she said, as there is still a high blood count in his kidneys. The boy was allegedly assaulted prior to writing his English exams last Tuesday (10 November) by about 20 assailants, some in school and some having left school, that jumped from two VW Golfs to attack him.

It is understood he tried to stop other children from being bullied on the school grounds by the same assailants, providing them motive to come after him.

“The school now wants a report from my son about the happenings, but the report we gave to the investigating officer should suffice,” the mom said.

A case of attempted murder was opened with the Roodepoort Police, but the investigating officer, Sergeant Sibeko, hails from the Honeydew Police and works for the child care unit.

Her son is booked off from school until next week. According to the outraged mother, the school has yet to make a decision about whether to suspend the identified assailants, or take a different course of action.

“Quite frankly, they should be in jail, not in school,” she told the Record.

Meanwhile the Record has been notified that the school sent out an SMS to parents the day after the assault (11 November). It read, “All parents and guardians: WRHS is attending to an allegation of assault that was perpetuated (!) by a group of learners on 9 and 10 November. West Ridge High.”

Other trusted sources have alleged that the deputy principal is facing a disciplinary hearing after he interfered with a matric pupil before exams. The offense is quoted as dismissable.

Meanwhile, the school has remained mum on the situation and the Department of Education has not responded to any of the Record’s queries, including those regarding an incident at the school in August.
