GALLERY: 18 Months of hard work pays off

ROODEPOORT – An evening of diplomas, trophies and prizes is held as students celebrate their graduation in high spirits.

The Travel Learning College in Weltevreden Park held its graduation ceremony on 17 November at the Roodepoort Civic Centre. The 23 graduates received their diplomas after completing an 18 month course in travel and tourism.

Brian Mcmillan, marketing manager for the college, said that around 60 students attend the college each year. He explained that because there are only a few students, the college can focus on a hands-on approach. “The students pack a three-year course into one year as well as six months practical.” The students get placed by TLC at a job and the employers then access their progress and performance after the six months. “Two of our students could not attend the ceremony, because they got jobs at Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida,” said Mcmillan.

After the hall went dark and silent, the 23 students approached their seats in two rows, carrying candles. Robyn Christie, general manager of Travelport SA was the speaker of the evening. She addressed the students by explaining the difference between travel and tourism and how important their jobs for South Africa as a tourist destination are. Students came on the stage in alphabetical order. The number of distinctions (more than 90 per cent), were called out as well as the module with the highest mark. The students got a chance to go on stage and throw their caps in celebration of the momentous occasion.

To finish off the ceremony, three special trophies were handed out – a warrior award for the most lovable personality, an award for personal growth and a trophy for focus and determination. Some of the students also received trophies for exceptional academic achievements. The last trophy handed out went to the student of the year, Venita Kuun, who not only excelled in academics, but in the job placement as well.
