Hailstorms can severely damage cars

JOBURG – Check weather apps before leaving your house, and adhere to other advice regarding hailstorms.

Motorists panicked on 16 November, while some stopped in the middle of the road helplessly when hail stones unexpectedly fell from the sky.

AA said motorists should have an idea about what the weather looks like for them to be able to plan their routes.

According to different car expects, a hailstorm can wreak havoc on your car and leave noticeable dents on its surface.

AA spokesperson Layton Beard said the damage requires the services of professional auto repairers even though it is costly.

He said they cannot advise motorists about who to go to because that is between motorists and service providers they are contracted to.

Beard said motorists should try and avoid suffering damage from hailstorms at all costs.

“Make sure your car is in a garage or any car shelter,” he said.

Beard said unfortunately in a situation where a hailstorm finds you driving on a highway, far from a shelter, there is nothing a motorist can do to save the car from being damaged.

According to Beard not only the car roof gets damaged but also the windscreen and window panes need to be attended to by glass-fitting companies.

He advises people to check weather updates before leaving their houses.

“Check weather apps, social networks to be able to plan for your day,” he said.

“At AA we have live weather and traffic updates on our Twitter every morning. This is done to help motorists know what to expect before hitting the road,” said Beard.

According to AutoMagic, if you were out and unaware of a hailstorm, whether you park your vehicle in an uncovered area, or you are simply unlucky enough to get caught in a hailstorm, hail damage is always unexpected. The most common areas affected include roof, bonnet and boot.
