Caved road in Florida

Traffic brought to a standstill because of caved road.

The sudden appearance of a sinkhole in Eeufees Road, Florida Lake brought motorists to a standstill on Thursday, 12 November.

The sinkhole which has been closed for the past few days, has left residents confused and wanting answers regarding when the road will be fixed.

“I’ve heard people in the community say the trees in the road caused the sinkhole to develop and I know that is not true,” said Eileen Schutzler, a Hamburg resident who says she drives every day on that street to go to work.

“Now people are planning to get rid of the trees and they should not because it is an important source of our heritage,” Schutzler said.

According to Eileen, the Voortrekkers planted the trees in Eeufees Road which is why she does not want it to be burned down or removed.

Caleb Finn from the On Florida Community Forum said he believes the sinkhole is caused by a storm water tower.

“There is a layer of concrete and tar on top of the storm water tower that caused the road to cave in.

He added community alerted patrollers on Thursday about the damaged road and the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) responded by closing off the street.

Bertha Peter- Scheepers, Spokesperson for the JRA, was not available for comment.
