Car wash business owners reflect on water crisis

JOBURG – Four local car wash businesses share how the water shortage problem may affect them.

A few local car washes share how the current water crisis impacts on their businesses.

The owner of Clearwater Car Wash in Struben’s Valley, Laura Roeloffze said her business has not been affected by water shortages, yet.

“We mostly wash cars with a dry wash that only requires between 500ml to one litre of water per car,” explained Roeloffze.

She further added that they use a water pressure sprayer that only uses about 30 per cent of water as the rest of it, is air.

Roeloffze said if the water crisis increases, she would be able to continue her business but only to a certain degree.

Hurricane Car Wash owner Allen Rudling said the current water situation has not affected his business in Fontainebleau, yet, and he doubts it will as they have taken precautions.

“We started recycling water since we opened our doors in 1998. We already knew back then that water is precious. About 85 per cent of our water is recycled,” said Rudling.

He said they do use fresh water to a degree but if they have to, they could proceed without it.

He continued and said people should realise the importance of natural resources and if more people had his mindset the water crisis would not be happening.

Manager of the Soapy Rides in Ferndale said the water crisis has not affected their business, yet, but as soon as water shedding becomes a reality, it will.

Prinsloo said they have not taken any precautions and do not have the option of recycled water or dry washes.

He said they will discuss the way forward as soon as the water has completely dried up.

The owner of the Caltex Garage Car Wash in Linden, Marco Dalle Ave said the water problem has also not affected them, yet, but he is very concerned as they have also not taken any precautions.

Dalle Ave said he will invest in Jo-Jo tanks to catch rain water and invest in a recycling system.
