Fraudsters try to cash R20k cheque

Teller finds something fishy about the cheque.

Two suspects were arrested and are being detained at the Roodepoort Police Station after trying to cash a fraudulent cheque in Goldman Street.

The fraudsters, two men and a woman, approached a teller at Absa Bank in Goldman Street on Monday (9 November) to cash a cheque to the value of R20 000. The female suspect, 25, gave the teller her ID book.

According to Florida Police spokesperson Sergeant Mpho More, the teller was suspicious of the cheque and decided to phone the company whose name was written on it. The cheque was written out and not printed.

“She was then informed that the company does not issue cheques in that fashion,” More said.

“The Florida Police were contacted and two suspects, the woman and a man, 28, were arrested and later detained ath the Roodepoort Police Station.

“They are waiting to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on charges of fraud.”
