How to save energy

JOBURG – Reduce energy by making small changes.

Eskom Integrated Demand Media released a statement on encouraging residents to save money by reducing their electricity usage.

Eskom IDM said that, by changing from electrical to gas or solar powered appliances, residents could save thousands on their annual electricity bill. However making this big change in tough economic times is not always possible.

According to Eskom, people have yet to start thinking of how they can save electricity in small ways. which can make a big change.

Some tips:

Connect your washing machine to the cold tap and refrain from using the spin function too often. Give your tumble dryer a rest and hang clothes outside on a clothes line.

Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) use up to 80 per cent less energy than conventional light bulbs and last up to eight times longer. Light Emitting Diodes are even more energy efficient, they use up to 85 per cent less energy.

Simple yet effective, these banks are powered and charged using the sun. They are cheap and a convenient way to keep devices such as laptops, cell phones and tablets charged.

Make small changes to allow natural light into your windows and open your windows to allow fresh breezes to cool down your home. Consider installing shade awnings on the outside of windows that are facing the sun.

Think about installing energy and water saving shower-heads. Their efficient flow rate means you use less hot water and your geyser uses less electricity.

An electrical element geyser can use up to 40 per cent of your monthly electricity. Replace it with a high-pressure solar water heating system, which can reduce your electricity bill by up to 24 per cent.

Cooking accounts for up to 8 per cent of the energy consumption in your home. Consider using a gas stove.

Remember the basics. Switch off lights that you do not use and unplug chargers and if it is possible, switch from electricity to gas or solar options.
