Unified Public now Battle of the Books champs

Meet this year's Battle of the Books Champions.

Pupils from Unified Public school are this year’s champions of Battle of the Books.

The pupils in grade 6 and 7 participated in the Johannesburg’s greater region competition, competing with 216 schools.

The competition starts in February and each school is given 15 books to read and are asked questions about the books.

The competition has a Library, Zonal, Regional and Metropolitan rounds and pupils are expected to know all 15 books inside out.

With the help of their dedicated teacher Betty Madiba, the pupils excelled in the competition.

This is not the first time this group of pupils has brought pride to their school.

Last year, they were crowned champions of Story Skirmish which is the junior competition for pupils in grade 4 and 5.

To prove that reading has become a culture at the school, their grade 4 and 5 pupils came second in the Story Skirmish losing by a mere two points.

They were competing against 208 schools throughout the region.

“These children are as passionate about reading as I am. They have brought pride to their school and I am proud to be their teacher. They have shown that no matter what school you are from, if you have the love for books that all that matters. We spend hours in the library reading and discussing books,” said Madiba.
