Davidsonville tired of being anarchists

Some from Davidsonville to be housed in Fleurhof RDP development.

Residents are tired of being anarchists in their community and voiced this opinion at a recent public meeting.

Last week Wednesday (14 October) the Davidsonville Community Centre came alive around the community outreach programme, Ntirhisano.

The Gauteng Provincial Government created this program to seek to clear service-delivery breakdowns in communities by fostering cooperation between government leaders and residents. Davidsonville residents got a chance to hold local and provincial leaders account during the imbizo.

The meeting was attended by Premier David Makhura, his executive council and members of the City of Johannesburg’s (CoJ’s) mayoral committee (MMCs). Resident Helen Moyce was the first to take the microphone and accused the government of making coloured people feel like stepchildren.

“This government is not looking after us. For months our grandchildren were not going to [Roodepoort Primary] school because of petty politics. You don’t care about us or our children’s future, you are just here to get us to vote for you,” she was quoted saying. Daniel van Zyl proceeded to complain that unemployed youth are being forced into crime because doors were being shut in their faces.

Lessons interrupted at primary school

“As a parent it saddens me to see my children so hopeless; we all know that an idle mind is the devil’s playground,” he said.

Criselda Lewis also complained that RDP housing is being developed and rolled out too slowly in the community.

“Just because we don’t toyi-toyi and burn down libraries, no one at CoJ takes our plight seriously — why do we need to be anarchists for the government to listen to us?” she complained.

Tension mounts in Davidsonville again

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi reassured residents that calm had been restored at the controversial school, learners gearing up for their year-end examinations. He added some locals were employed at the school to alleviate unemployment in the community. MMC for community development, councillor Chris Vondo, on behalf of the mayor, said residents on the 96-97 housing waiting list will be allocated to the nearby Fleurhof housing development.
