Relay for Life raises over R150 000

Cancer survivors triumphed as they celebrated life.

More than R150 000 was raised at Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) West Rand’s eighth Relay for Life event last week Friday 16 October.

This event which was held at Hoërskool Monument’s rugby field, takes place over a 12-hour overnight period and is aimed at raising awareness about cancer.

About 100 teams joined the fight against cancer and 150 cancer survivors attended the prestigious event.

The high school field was filled with over 1500 people who attended to experience a survivors lap and to honour cancer survivors and their caregivers.

After sunset, tribute was paid in a very emotive Luminaria Ceremony, according to Amanda, as they lit candles inside Luminaria bags which encircled the track. The Luminaria bags are dedicated to those who have lost their battle against cancer.

“We want to thank each and every sponsor, school, teacher, individual, businesses, clubs and vendors who contributed to making this year’s event a huge success,” Amanda Roestoff, spokesperson for CANSA West Rand, said.

Teams and individuals were recognised for their support, initiative and endurance.

There were several awards such as The Most Dedicated Relayer, Best Fundraising and Most Team entries as well as The Best Dressed Team and the Overall Best Team.

“As the committee takes a breather after months of hard work and planning, we look forward to ensure a bigger fundraiser next year.”
