Ward 71 spruced up during iCop

The municipality shows they care for residents of Ward 71.

Ward 71 was the subject of a recent clean-up operation organised under the umbrella of Region C’s Integrated Community Outreach Programme (iCop).

From as early as 9am employees from entities and departments such as Johannesburg City Parks & Zoo, City Power, Pikitup, the Metro Police, Joburg Water and the department of Health and Social Development combed the streets of Ward 71 to detect service delivery breakdowns. They replaced leaking water pipes, cleared blocked drains and fixed faulty and malfunctioning street lights. Other work done included pruning trees, giving select streets new road markings, cleaning up litter from parks and fumigating some areas for mosquitoes and rats.

Scores of people had also, in line with Executive Mayor Councillor Parks Tau’s Go Jozi Healthy Lifestyle Programme, received free health tests for cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes.

About 180 people worked through Princess, Grobler Park, Lindhaven, Reefhaven, Witpoortjie, Culembeeck, Batavia and Davidsonville in the operation which was coordinated by ward inspector Caroline Minie, ward commander Ronnie Segoale and ward councillor Gert Niemand.

Although happy about the outcome, Minie said, “Faulty street lights still hamper our neighbourhoods.”

“I’ve given Segoale a list of defective street lights so he can liaise with City Power to attend to them as a matter of urgency.”

The neighbourhoods in Ward 71 are also hampered with the theft of road signs, illegal electricity connections and sewer blockages, especially in and around informal settlements.

Ward 71 councillor Gert Niemand helps residents with service delivery issues in the abovementioned areas. He can be contacted on 078 743 9681 or via email at ticket@polka.co.za
