Charterhouse sees benefit in compost

RADIOKOP – Charterhouse goes green for their vegetable garden.

Charterhouse Preparatory School embraces the vibrant rich soil of Honeydew by going green in their Footprints Eco-Club.

Charterhouse is based in Honeydew and because it is a geographical area that was once a large inland water mass, the soil is rich and fertile. This area was once a vibrant farming community, but has rapidly been developed into housing developments.

The school started with a weekly meeting to take care of the vegetable garden which is open to pupils and teachers as part of a holistic learning experience. The sun enabled a great crop that was quickly harvested.

The school also looked into interesting ways to create their own compost. The food used for the compost is collected from classrooms.Once full, they leave it to stand for two weeks before adding it to other compost heaps. The initiative also invested in an eco-tunnel to help the vegetables grow to a good size before harvesting.

The lessons learned and development that have come from this intiative will be passed onto the senior grades.
