Residents voice their opinion about Oscar’s release

"You cannot justify blatant murder."

The Record has spoken to residents about what their views are on Oscar Pistorius’ release next week.

Pistorius will be released on correctional supervision on Tuesday, 20 October from serving about a year in prison.

The date of his parole will be from Tuesday 20 October 2015, until 2019.

Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide and was given a sentence of five years. He served 14 months at the Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria.

According to a local newspaper, the state is preparing to appeal against the culpable homicide verdict.

Here are what local residents think about his release:

Chesney Page from Florida: I do not think he should have been released so soon. Although he is disabled, murder is murder and he should face his punishment for taking someone’s life. There are people with worse disabilities and they still serve their full sentence. You cannot justify blatant murder.

Renetta Govender from Florida: I feel only Oscar, Reeva and God knows the truth about what happened and even though I feel the system has failed us, God will deal with Oscar in his own way and in his time.

Kumi Pather from Roodepoort: Pistorius should not have been released and I think he got away with murder because of his celebrity status and his wealth.

Do you oppose his release or do you think his jail sentence was fair?
