Fun facts about the English language

'Stewardesses' is the longest word that is typed with only the left hand.

There is an estimated R300 000 words in the English Oxford Dictionary.

The first dictionary written was in 1604 and since then, people have been reliant on the use of the book.

Whether you use an electronic dictionary, or an old-school one you carry everywhere, many people cannot imagine their lives without a dictionary.

Because it is National Dictionary Day, we give you fun facts about the English language you may not have known:

• The only 15 letter word that can be spelled without repeating a letter is “uncopyrightable.”

• No word in the English language rhymes with month.

• “Underground” is the only word in the English language that begins and ends with the letters “und.”

• The longest word in the English language, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. This is a lung disease caused by inhaling very fine ash and sand dust.

• To “testify” was based on men in the Roman court swearing to a statement made by swearing on their testicles.
