Kids fast, residents furious

Speeding a consistent problem in this street.

Some residents in Borniet Avenue are at the end of their tether with speed demons using their road to get their kicks.

On Saturday at about 6pm it went awry for one such young driver. Sarel van der Walt said he and his wife went for a walk when they saw a vehicle speeding in the direction of their house. When they returned they found the vehicle went through their palisades and ramped into their house. Van der Walt said the driver did admit to drinking and a liquor store slip was found in his vehicle. He also said the vehicle must have been doing over a 100km/h in the 60km/h zone.

Van der Walt and his neighbour Fred Peach said this was inevitable and they expect more accidents of a similar nature. Peach says he has brought the problem under Councillor Suzanne Clarke’s attention but are still waiting for action to be taken.

Clarke in turn said to solve the problem is not so easy. She explained the Johannesburg Road Agency’s (JRA) policy is to only build speed humps in front of schools and old age homes. According to her one route to take is for the residents in the street to draw up a petition but currently there are 900 outstanding petitions at the council of which most is for JRA. Another avenue residents can take is to pay for their own speed humps but this will set them back about R15 000 per hump.
