ZANDSPRUIT – Soccer lives in the hearts of the children

One of the few things that are in the hearts of the Zandspruit children is soccer.

On 9 October, one of their dreams came true when the non-profit organisation Impophomo handed over full sports equipment to about 120 underprivileged children.

The event took place at Emthonjeni and was attended by hundreds of happy children, community leaders, sports organisers and parents.

Project coordinator Jacques Vlok said they worked hard putting together everything to assist the community.

“We want the children to grow up to be the future of the nation,” said Vlok.

He said they donated 150 pair of soccer boots, soccer and netball balls, soccer and netball kits to the value of about R100 000.

He said Impophomo received the generous donation from Urban Dynamics.

Vlok further explained that for years they worked with the community of Zandspruit and helped making the children’s soccer tournament dreams a success.

In 2009, Impophomo held its first knock-out format Soccer competition for the youth of Zandspruit.

The Umthonjeni project coordinator Dikeledi Gouwe advised the children to play soccer and go to school.

“Soccer is your talent, you were born with it. But one more thing that you should not forget, is to learn and further your studies. Even after soccer when you are old, you will still have your education,” advised Gouwe.

Nhlanhla Nkosi, member of the Zandspruit Community said, “We are here to make sure each and every child’s soccer dream comes true. We do not get paid for all this, but we volunteer from our hearts.”

Sinethemba Paliso, Zandspruit sports forum organiser, said they want to unite their community through sports.

“Soccer unites people everywhere. And again it helps us keep the children away from the crime-ridden places. All we need now is a strong support from parents and established companies,” said Paliso.
