Mom awarded R55k after night in cell

She was wrongfully arrested since she posed no threat to the domestic worker

A mom from Davidsonville who was locked up for one night with her baby at Roodepoort Police Station, has been awarded R55 000 by the court.

The mother, Queen Marumo and her seven-month-old baby was locked up in March 2010, after she allegedly violated an interim protection order her domestic worker brought against her. Marumo initially wanted R150 000 from the South African Police Service. She also claimed to not know about the protection order.

The judge presiding over the case, Louis de Klerk, said she was wrongfully arrested since she posed no threat to the domestic worker.
