Wildebraam Street suffers severe damage
WELTEVREDEN PARK – An impassable lane on Wildebraam Street appears to be worsening.
A large damaged section of road has caused concern for Weltevreden Park residents. On Wildebraam Street a deep hole spans the length of one lane. The damage is of particular concern as it is on a corner in the road and is not immediately visible to oncoming drivers.
Ward 126 Councillor Mike Tonkin believes that the problem has been worsening steadily. A stream of water flows out of the hole, causing it to widen and create other potholes in the road downhill.
Tonkin stated that he escalated an existing complaint about the damage some two weeks before 8 October. “There is some disagreement between Joburg Water and the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) as to who is responsible,” said Tonkin. The damage appears to have been caused by a burst pipe. Tonkin believes it is the JRA’s responsibility to effect the repairs, “Even if Joburg Water caused it the JRA is responsible for repairing it. Motorists are being put in danger and damage to their vehicles is being done.”
Member of the Welview Resident’s Association, Neville Burnett added, “It’s an accident waiting to happen. People come through here at speed and the hole could cause them to swerve.”
JRA spokesperson, Bertha Peters-Scheepers stated, “A JRA inspector was on site to investigate the trench… opposite house number 43 in Weltevreden Park. Our finding is that it has [been] excavated by Joburg Water Hamberg Depot. We will be following up with them regarding progress as well as finalisation so that the road can be reinstated.”
