ID Smartcards are not available at banks yet

The smart ID cards will only be available next month.

The new ID Smartcards will be available at selected banks and not you nearest bank as the Record previously published.

According to FNB’s Corporate Communications Manager Dumezulu Shiburi, they have received backlash from customers wanting to apply for their ID Smartcards at their Westgate branch.

“Customers who wanted to apply at Westgate Shopping Centre, said we are lying because the article New ID smartcards available at selected banks stipulates they can apply at their nearest bank,” Shiburi said.

Below is a list of frequently asked questions released from FNB regarding the smartcards:

When will this be available in branches?

At the end of November when the pilot programme is completed and based on the results they obtain, it will roll out commence nationally. This will be to select representation points across the country which FNB will communicate fully in due course.

Is this available in all branches?

No. The service will be available at selected FNB branches and they will confirm these details in due course. They will continue to expand their number of Smart ID delivery branches into the future.

How much does a Smart ID cost?

There is no additional fee to that normally charged by Home Affairs. ID’s are currently R140. All passport and ID applications are subject to fees and associated conditions as stipulated by the Department of Home Affairs.

Must customers have an FNB account?

Yes, they will update accounts, Know Your Customer (KYC) details etc, at the same time for customers’ convenience.

Are we training extra staff?

The Smart ID service will be staffed by Home Affairs employees only.

How do Customers apply?

This is still in pilot phase until the end of November and is on an “invite to apply” basis only. The process that invited FNB customers need to follow will be fully explained on invites sent out. “Invite to apply” – means currently customers are unable to apply as this is still closed and in pilot phase.

Why are you only offering this to FNB Customers?

This is as per the agreement reached between all contributing Banks, South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC) and the Department of Home Affairs.
