Support cancer awareness campaigns

Johannesburg – During October awareness about cancer is created so that the public know what signs of the disease to look for.

October is National Cancer Month and is used by different cancer organisations to raise awareness about the disease.

Sunflower Fund is encouraging everyone to take a stand and show they care about people with serious blood disorders such as leukaemia.

They are encouraging the public to pledge their support by buying and wearing their bandanas on National Bandana Day on 12 October.

Lauren Corlett, national public relations and marketing specialist of Sunflower Fund, explained that the funds raised through National Bandana Day, will go toward paying for the expensive tissue typing (DNA) tests for new stem cell donors to join the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) and the cost for each test is R2 000.

“Behind the campaign, stand the cancer patients who face the daunting task of fighting for their lives. This, unfortunately, is a reality for countless people – their only hope is to receive a life-saving stem cell transplant, and that is what we are raising money for,” Corlett said.

The Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) is raising awareness about the disease through their Tell her, tell all women’s health campaign.

The focus is on educating the public regarding cancers that affect women, including breast, cervical, ovarian and uterine cancers.

CEO of Cansa Elise Joubert said the Tell her, tell all campaign is aimed at educating women on the importance of knowing their bodies, going for regular cancer screening, and encouraging all women to get to know the warning signs of cancer and what to do to reduce the risk of cancer.

“It’s vital to educate oneself and to know the signs and symptoms of these cancers. At Cansa we have over 180 fact sheets sharing the signs, risks, symptoms and treatment options of all types of cancers that can be viewed on our website or if anybody needs more help, they can give us a call on our toll-free line,” she said.
