Emergency shelter needs help with security

Teen's Haven plans needs assistance to renovate a house that was donated to them.

Teen’s Haven, an emergency shelter, needs help securing the property that was donated to them.

The non-profit organisation has taken care of about 54 children since it was officially registered in July 2011 and is currently home to six children between the ages of three and 15.

“Sometimes we receive calls from social workers or the Police asking us to take care of a child just for the night or maybe longer,” said founder Tina Smith.

She added it has always been her passion to help children in need.

“I am horrendously overprotective and very old-fashioned. My children know education comes first.”

Tina initially wanted to helped troubled teenage girls but then various organisations asked her to help younger children as well.

“Teen’s Haven is not a children’s home, it is run by a family,” said Tina.

The home that was given to the Haven is a deceased’s estate and they have started renovating it already.

According to Tina, because the house is not secure, criminals have gained access to it and stolen everything from the basins to the cables.

The Haven needs precast walls, razor wires and possibly electric fencing attached to a solar panel as there is currently no electricity in the house.

“We are trying to get the house ready by December so that we can start accepting emergency cases,” said Tina.
