Bastion hosts provincial rugby tournament

Hoërskool Bastion’s rugby fields was the chosen battlegrounds as the first round of the North Region 7’s Tournament took place.

The event was hosted by the Golden Lions Rugby Union in conjunction with the school.

Teams such as the Pumas, Lions, Leopards and Valke participated in the competition.

The Leopards were crowned winner of the Men’s Cup while the Blue Bulls won the women’s cup.

Leopards player Ian Heyns was named male player of the tournament while the Bull’s Nadine Roos was named female player of the tournament.

“This is the first time a school has hosted this tournament and we are happy with how it has been conducted. We started the tournament in 2010 after we saw there was not much emphasis on the sevens format. This tournament has come a long way and has progressed the level of sevens rugby in the province,” said GLRU’s Pieter Visser.
