Name the new CoJ entity and win

Name Joburg's new broadband entity on twitter and stand a chance to win R10 000.

If a resident can come up with a name for a newly-established City of Johannesburg (CoJ) entity, he or she stands the chance to win R10 000.

CoJ has established a new municipal entity (ME) for its broadband network. The new City-owned company joins a family of MEs already boasting names such as Pikitup, City Power and Joshco, to name a few, it said in a recent statement.

“Any CoJ resident who comes up with a unique, exciting and catchy name for the new ME stands a chance to win a cool R10 000 prize,” it read.

“The names must be original and entrants are cautioned to steer clear of the usual suspects, including terms such as connectivity and wired.”

In essence the new ME is an open access fibre operator whose major objective is to bridge the city’s digital divide. The aim is to transform Johannesburg into a true world-class African city of the future. It was launched in line with the City’s Growth and Development Strategy 2040 (GDS 2040) Smart City drive.

“The entity will be responsible for connecting and maintaining broadband distribution across the city,” it read.

To date the city has rolled out over 1 150 km of fibre optic cables, also in Roodepoort and Florida. With this CoJ means to position the city as Africa’s leading investment and commercial destination.

“Being a digital city will also result in reduced cost of telecommunications, improved service delivery and increase in access to information technology.”
