Surviving the heat

Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays.

A UFO may have been spotted in Clarens, Free State but I’m feeling like a real alien right now.

For the past week, those around me have been complaining about the heat while I’m still wearing thick woolen jerseys just for fun.

Johannesburg will be 32ºC today and stay over 30ºC until Saturday while Pretoria will be even higher at 35ºC starting today until Thursday.

And with the heat wave frying the Jacaranda trees up in Pretoria, it has left me wondering as to when exactly summer is coming.

As the kind alien I think I am, I decided to do a bit of research on how to stay cool, refreshed and alive during this hot period.

• Never leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles.

• Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.

• Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing.

• Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.

• Postpone outdoor games and activities.

• Use a buddy system when working in excessive heat. Take frequent breaks if you must work outdoors.

• Check on your animals frequently to ensure they are not suffering from the heat

• If you are going to spend time in a pool, ensure your safety and that of children around you. Ensure they are supervised while around and in the pool.

• Keep a close eye on babies, the elderly and children. Ensure they stay hydrated as well.

• Heatstroke, heat exhaustion and sunstroke are possible with prolonged exposure to the heat.
