GALLERY: Wellridge Academy reaches out to PETS

WELTEVREDENPARK-Welridge Academy show thy care by raising funds for PETS.

Welridge Academy held a fundraising event for the Pet Empowerment in Townships (Pets) on 2 October at the school.

Principal Janine Joubert said the reason for choosing this non-governmental organisation, was to teach children how to treat animals properly.

“There are lot of people who mistreat animals and I wanted to bring that message across to the children and, in the same breath teach them how pets should be treated,” said Joubert.

School children were treated to a variety of activities such as jumping castle and obstacle course.

According to the principal, all pupils were asked to each bring R10 and pet food for fundraising.

Joubert said a total of R1 690 was raised and funds will go towards the veterinary fund of Pets, to sterilize animals.

One of the volunteer at Pets, Laura Whittaker explained that they have been running for three years, and they aim to help poor communities and townships such as Orange Farm in south of Joburg.

“We work with the communities to improve the lives of disadvantaged animals. We do so by giving them shelter, regular inoculations, sterilisations, daily meals, and vet care in emergencies. We also re-home the animals that are unloved, lost or unwanted,” said Whittaker.

She added that since the organisation started, they have sterilised over a 1000 animals.

“We believe in working hand-in-hand with the animals and people of these impoverished areas to create stability, unity and trust among them,” concluded Whittaker.

Whittaker made a plea to the public, to donate to the organisation has no funds.
