GALLERY: Chic Mamas Do Care for children

RUIMSIG – A group of women encourage residents to raise funds towards educating children.

A group of women came together to raise funds at the One and Only Alice Art Gallery in Ruimsig. The women are part of a non-government organisation called Chic Mamas Do Care Jozi, which was started in Cape Town on 25 September.

This initiative’s primary goal is to raise funds for education projects in their community through the fashion exchange model. They consider the model a good method of encouraging people to volunteer in charity work.

Chief operating officer Lelane Brits said they collect clothes from the community that are in good condition, and sell them to people who attend the event in order raise funds. “People who donate clothes receive tokens that can be used to purchase clothes from the pop up store,” she said.

The funds raised go to the Ithuteng Community After Care and Recycle Project at the Refilwe Community Project in Lanseria. Brits said that the group of women are concerned about the children of South Africa and their future. Furthermore, they are passionate about education and believe in the importance of early childhood development.

Mr South Africa Armand du Plessis appeared with founder of Chic Mamas Do Care Jozi, Abigel Sheridan at the event. Du Plessis encouraged the crowd not to stop believing in children nor grow weary of making an impact in their lives.

Chic Mamas Do Care Jozi donated R30 000 to the Refilwe Community Project after the weekend events. The project seeks to care, feed and protect disadvantaged children. It also provides a safe and loving home for babies on their way to their forever families, through adoption.

Chic Mamas Do Care Jozi plan to have another fashion exchange event next month and the date will be released soon on their Facebook page. “The reward that comes with being part of a solution is amazing. Chic Mamas makes it easy to clean up your cupboard, donate those items and generate an income for education,” Brits said.
