HONEYDEW – Robbery at residential premises in the Honeydew SAPS precinct remains a critical problem.

Murder in the Honeydew SAPS precinct has decreased by 18.6 percent. This is according to the latest crime statistics released on 29 September.

Theft out of motor vehicle has increased by 3.1 per cent.

National Police Minister Nathi Nhleko and National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega released the national crime statistics for the financial year 2014/15 to Parliament’s Portfolio Committee.

Most crimes in Fairland SAPS precinct dropped compared to the previous financial year. However, hijacking was higher, with eight cases reported. Robbery at residential premises was a worrying crime trend and had increased by 7.7 per cent.

The statistics indicated that 14 cases of hijacking were reported in the Muldersdrift SAPS precinct. Robberies at residential premises had increased by 1.5 per cent and 68 incidents were reported.

Although the murder rate dropped in the precinct, attempted murder increased by 31.8 per cent and 41 sexual related crimes were reported. Common assault increased by 45.9 per cent with 124 incidents reported.

Gauteng Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson Andy Mashaile said, “We need to know why people are killing each other.”

Mashaile further explained that the crime rate, especially murder, that had gone up was shocking. “The feeling of safety is not there in the community anymore and we need to restore that,” he explained.

He suggested that police should implement strategies that would be relevant to the problem. “Obviously where the crime has decreased, we commend the police,” he concluded.
