Illegal dumpsite to be cleared after intervention

"Illegal dumping is not acceptable in our neighbourhood," a resident said.

An illegal dumpsite on the corner of Corlett and Chaucer Avenues is to be cleared following a resident’s complaint.

On Friday Pat Mntambo noted the eyesore where a skip, apparently belonging to or hired by no one, was overflowing and shared photos with the Record.

“This is unacceptable in our neighbourhood,” he wrote.

The Record intervened and reported the matter to Ward 71 councillor Gert Niemand who in turn contacted Metro Police to ascertain whether by-laws were being broken and fines applied. He also confirmed the open piece of veld belongs to the City of Johannesburg (CoJ). It is doubtful that the perpetrator will be pursued as the person at current cannot be identified, JMPD deputy director of Region C Mike Smith told him.

Smith committed to having the ward commander investigate the property and skip and approached Pikitup to join forces with the JMPD for removal. A date has not yet been set.

CAPTION: This overflowing skip has a resident infuriated at the municipality. Photos submitted.
