Adventure club to celebrate 20 years

If a person enjoys experiencing the great outdoors and spending time with others who also enjoy nature then they are welcome.

At the end of October, the oldest hiking club on the West Rand will be celebrating 20 years.

The Florida Hiking and Adventure Club will host a dinner dance in honour of the celebrations with a Roaring Twenties theme.

“If a person enjoys experiencing the great outdoors and spending time with others who also enjoy nature then they are welcome,” said the club’s committee member Bill Brough. The club is heavily involved in the community and has numerous social responsibilities.

These include eradicating alien weed from the butterfly sanctuary in Ruimsig, entertaining previously disadvantaged children on hikes and nature outings, hunting and destroying snares and traps at Rhenosterspruit Nature Conservancy near the Cradle of Humankind.

Once a month the club does an end of the week hike and these can either be a base camp type hike or a backpacking hike.

Twice a year, the club does a four to seven day hike, usually over a long weekend.

Over the years, members from the club have tackled the Fish River Canyon, Naukloof, Mount Kilimanjaro, the Tuscanies, Yorkshire Dales and the foothills of the Himalayas.

The club also have their monthly club nights every last Tuesday of the month where guest speakers are often invited to speak about birds, fauna and flora, weather and travel while cooking and photographic competitions take place.

There is also a bring and braai where members get a chance to socialize. Barn and Line dancing is also included.
